- Massive Resistance and Southern Womanhood offers a gender, cultural and socialhistory that examines the intersectional entanglements of white segregationist women’s activism in Massive Resistance in Arkansas, Louisiana, and South Carolina. It provides an analysis of women’s involvement in white supremacist movements during the 1950s and 1960s. Whereas a masculinist rhetoric and the concomitant ideology of White Southern Womanhood has led to a focus on masculinity in previous studies on Massive Resistance, my dissertation shows that women served as bridge leaders between white supremacist resistance to the Civil Rights Movement and had a pivotal function in linking Massive Resistance to the rise of New Conservatism in the 1960s through maternal respectability politics.

- Significant sex differences exist in the incidence, pathogenesis, pharmacology, and outcome of cardiovascular diseases. The underlying causes are only partially understood. Little is known regarding sex disparities in the vasculature. In a joint cooperation with the group of Prof. Petra Knaus (FU Berlin) strong differences in migration patterns between male and female human endothelial cells were observed. Female human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) exhibited significantly increased VEGF-dependent migration compared to male HUVEC. This could suggest differences in vascular repair properties between genders. The aim of our project is therefore to analyze molecular mechanisms for the observed sex differences in migratory properties of male and female HUVEC. In particular, we will focus on sex-specific differences in VEGF- induced signaling pathways of the cells. The results of the project could contribute to our understanding of physiological differences and help to disclose mechanisms responsible for gender differences in the vascular system.

- Die Frage nach der Mobilität von Frauen und weiteren benachteiligten Gruppen im lateinamerikanischen Hochschulsystem ist das Thema des Projekts. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf der Verschränkung von Gender, Ethnizität und Ungleichheit in diesem gerade auch in der lateinamerikanischen Geschichte mit Emanzipationsprozessen verbundenen Ort. Es sollen Maßnahmen für lateinamerikanische Hochschulen entwickelt und umgesetzt werden, welche die Strukturen bekämpfen, die Diskriminierung hervorbringen und somit der Mobilität von Frauen und weiteren Gruppen im Bildungssystem und außerhalb entgegenstehen. Darunter gehören: Änderung der Zugangsmechanismen zu Bildungseinrichtungen, Entwicklung eines postgraduierten Studiengangs zur Qualifizierung von wissenschaftlichen Personal im Bereich der sozialen Inklusion und Gleichstellung.

- Das Forschungsprojekt untersucht die Veränderungen der politischen und kulturellen Topographie der lateinamerikanischen Megastädte durch aktuelle Erinnerungsprojekte und -praktiken im städtischen Raum. Dabei wird öffentliches Erinnern von Gewalterfahrungenverstanden als politische, kulturelle, diskursive Praxis und zugleich als umkämpftes, konfliktives Feld. Wie und wo wird „traumatische“ Vergangenheit im Stadtaum der Metropole sichtbar, verkörpert und zur Sprache gebracht, welche Stimmen, Erfahrungen und Interessen artikulieren sich darin – insbesondere von Frauen, der nachfolgenden Generationen sowie ethnisch bzw. ethnisierten „Anderer“ – und wie wirken Erinnerungspraxen auf urbaneRäume, Konflikte und Imaginarios zurück, etwa in Bezug auf Vorstellungen von „Politik“, “Urbanität“, „Öffentlichkeit/Privatheit“ und Geschlechterbilder? Am Beispiel der beiden lateinamerikanischen Megastädte Mexiko-Stadt und Buenos Aires, in denen Memoria jeweils ganz unterschiedlich konfiguruiert ist, wird vergleichend untersucht, wie kommunikatives zu kulturellem Stadtgedächtnis wird, welche Erinnerungskonflikte dabei entstehen und wie konkrete „Erinnerungsorte“ zu gesellschaftlichen „Erinnerungsräumen“ werden. In dem interdisziplinär angelegten Forschungsprojekt werden Stränge der – vor allem in Mexiko hochentwickelten - kulturwissenschaftlichen Stadtanthropologie mit denen der eher in Südamerika beheimateten Erinnerungsforschung verknüpft; zentrale Ebenen einer solchen disziplinübergreifenden kulturwissenschaftlichen Konzeption sind die Dimensionen Diskursivität, Räumlichkeit und Visualität (Diskursanalyse, Ethnographie, Foto-Ethnographie u.a.). Dabei werden Megastädte als sozial und kulturell produzierte Räume und kulturelle wie politische „Archive“ verstanden, in denen sich Gewalterfahrungen einschreiben, die in Konflikten der Gegenwart aktiviert werden. Untersucht wird somit die räumlich-kulturelle Verortung von „Erinnerung“ und die damit einhergehenden Metamorphosen des Politischen in der urbanen Gegenwart.

- For the last thirty-five years, Islamic Republic of Iran has been one of the hotbeds of emigration. The phenomenon of forced migration has touched Iranians of all political, religious, socio-economical and ethnic backgrounds, and has sent countless numbers of women and men into exile. A large number of such individuals have sought protection and refuge in Germany and have formed an ethno-national semi-diaspora at the heart of Western Europe. Outside of their Iranian patriarchal context, these women and men, however, hold fast to their re-constructed national identity, their sense of belonging to the same land and cherish their glorious ancestry which dates back to the Persian Empire – most probably a defense mechanism against the Islamic fundamentalism that the name Iran connotes for many of them. Theoretically building on the extensive bulk of research conducted in memory studies, migration studies and gender studies, the proposed PhD project aims at understanding how the cultural memory of Iranian diaspora influences the formation of their sense of belonging and national identity in exile, and what the impact of gender difference on this process as well as on the individuals' level of engagement with their new environment is. Due to the lack of comprehensive research on the Iranian exile community in Germany – as well as elsewhere in Europe – this project will not only bring Iran to the academic migration discourse, but will also feed into the existing literature on gender, memory and exile through a gendered analysis of the ways in which women and men remember and consequently re-construct their sense of selfhood and identity outside the geographical setting, in which they were socialized.

- Our project investigates the usage and mobilisation of human rights by LGBTIQ* movements since the 1970s. One of our main research interests concerns the ways in which these mobilisations enabled certain kinds of agency and impeded others. We also ask which effects these mobilisations had on the LGBTIQ* movements themselves. Of particular interest to us are transnational LGBTIQ* networks and education politics as well as policy. The period of investigation extends from the (re-) emergence of LGBTIQ* movements in the 1970s, over the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s, debates about same sex marriage in the 1990s and 2000s, to the increasing institutionalisation of LGBTIQ* causes – and countermobilizations against them – in the states of the Global North in the 2010s. The project is part of the German Research Foundation (“Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft”, DFG) research unit 2265 “Law – Gender – Collectivity. Processes of standardization, categorization and solidarization” which investigates law and gender as dimensions influencing the development of different collectives. Certain exchange processes, interdependencies, contradictions, and ambiguities develop at the intersection of everyday, institutional, and judicial practices. Focussing on these developments is central to the work within the research unit. Subject of the second funding phase, beginning in 2021, are collectives as important drivers of changes in society’s understandings of community, common good, and solidarity. The unit’s main research focus will be on struggles about what defines “the general”, attempts of its reconfiguration as well as the conceptualization of a new common. The research unit consists of scholars from the Humboldt University Berlin (HU), the Free University Berlin (FU), the Technical University Berlin (TU), the University of Potsdam (UP) and the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (EUV).
