Description

Habilitation project examining epoch-specific body concepts in Greco-Hellenistic and Roman antiquity. Applies theoretical approaches from Gender Studies and Studies on Masculinities as well as cognitively oriented Historical Semantics. The project reconstructs ancient perception modes of the body and examines visual body discourses in relation to other body discourses (rhetoric, medicine, physiognomics, philosophy). A central focus is on discursive practices and mechanisms of establishing gender difference, particularly on culturally different constructions of female and male bodies in Greek and Roman culture.
