- In her PhD project, she analyses renegotiations of gender and state feminism between 2011 and 2014, critically engaging with theories on (counter)public spheres and intersectionality. For the analysis, three different dimensions of the public sphere have been distinguished: The institutional dimension encapsulates the level of the national family codification, the constitution of 2014 and the international codifications of women’s rights. Second, the question of representation of women as subjects and objects in the national mass media is investigated within the representational dimension of the public sphere and thirdly the dimension of the local public sphere in form of associations, organizations and encounters. She finds how the hegemonic concepts of “secular” and “modern” that have been developed in relation to a state feminist paradigm in the post-colonial context are inscribed in negotiation processes in different dimensions of the public sphere but also explores emerging networked feminist counterpublics.

- "This research project explores the relationship between love, sexuality, and materiality/corporality in intimate liaisons that Malagasy women engage in with foreign men in the context of economic-sexual exchanges in the port and tourist city of Diego Suarez. The Western understanding of prostitution is based on a dichotomous construction of sexuality. Marriage represents a place where sexuality is legitimized, because sexual relationships are based on emotionality as well as love. The ""illegitimate"" sexuality of prostitution, on the other hand, is based solely on socioeconomic motivations (Rubin 2003). This dichotomy of interpreting prostitution also underlies many African societies. Although the counter genderedindividuals who participate in these relationships develop feelings, ideas, and expectations, a broader understanding of transactional sex is excluded. The aim of my dissertation project is therefore to ethnographically examine and conceptually overcome a one-sided economic or moralizing understanding of prostitution and the dichotomous construction of ""legitimate"" vs. ""illegitimate"" sexuality that is linked to it. Theoretical starting points are recent debates on femininity, the body, and sexuality in sub-Saharan Africa (Hunter 2002, Cole 2010, USAAID 2020) and beyond. To this end, my thesis explores the relationship between love, sexuality, and materiality/corporality in intimate liaisons that Malagasy women engage in with foreign men in the context of economic-sexual exchanges in the port and tourist city of Diego Suarez. Introducing this approach to my ethnographic study of economic-sexual exchange relationships allows for the connection of three new approaches of social anthropological argumentation for the interpretation of this phenomenon: The first approach draws on studies that address questions about the role of concepts of love in marital and extramarital bonds in the African context, illuminating local social practices and understandings of love and their interaction with globalized formats of romantic love (Smith 2001, Cole & Linn 2009, Hunter 2010). The second approach focuses analysis on the agency of female sexuality and how it is used as an empowering resource by women (Tamale 2011, Spronk 2011, Hoffman & Moreno 2016). The third approach addresses how materiality/corporality are mutually dependent and how corporality contributes to the production, reproduction, and transformation of the material world of countergendered persons (Craig 2006, Meiu 2015, Tate 2016, Vartabedian 2016). My hypothesis is that it is not possibilities of profit or consumption that explain transactional sex or the formation and development of intimate liaisons in Diego Suarez, but rather that it is based on the cultural and social interaction between love, sexuality, and materiality/corporality. The dissertation is grounded in ten months of ethnographic fieldwork in Diego Suarez, Madagascar, employing dense participant observation, informal conversations, ethnographic interviews, biographical methods, and media research."

- The Initial Training Network Language, Cognition, and Gender investigates European languages from an interdisciplinary perspective to expand knowledge of how language influences and forms cognitive representations of women and men. The project addresses the impact of language and culture on the establishment and maintenance of gender inequality. It pursues four research objectives: (a) deriving indices for selected European languages reflecting gender-related representations, (b) investigating correlations between gender equality in formal language standards and socio-economic gender equality, (c) analysing language impact on gender stereotyping in social judgment and decision making, and (d) developing and evaluating scientifically-based guidelines and training tools for gender-fair communication.

- Based on a practice- and gender-theoretical framework, the project investigates the emergence of performative publics around the #metoo debate in Germany (Case Study I) as well as gender-politically relevant discourse formations in the context of the Corona crisis (Case Study II). Journalism has partly lost its exclusive function in society to set the agenda and accord relevance to issues of common concern. New kinds of actors, whether they are activists or private individuals, have emerged who are using quotidian digital media platforms to promote controversial issues and stir public debate in certain directions. These actors voice their views and concerns independently of journalism and actively promote the formation of new networks of like-minded actors. The resulting publics clearly show changing constellations of gendered structures of public articulation that mirror larger shifts in the complexity of publics and their conflictual, antagonistic and controversial character. The core interest of the project lies in investigating challenges to journalistic legitimacy and authority originating in and being structured by networked and digital communication between different actor groups, especially professional journalists, civic activists and individuals. These actors are regarded as equally involved in the specific emergence of what we call ‘performative publics’ (see Lünenborg & Raetzsch, 2018). This mutual making of performative publics is addressed theoretically with the analytical concept of media practice and is traced empirically with a mixed-methods design. Instead of a dichotomous distinction between private and public, the project aims to address gradual distinctions of personal vs. public poles of articulation (‘layers of publicness’). Such a gradual distinction is especially needed to focus on the alternation of speaker and audience positions in contested public discourses around gender and migration, but also between individual and institutionalised actors. Taken together, the theoretical concept of media practice shall be empirically developed and validated and establish a new methodology for similar research in German Media and Communication Studies on the margins and at the intersections of journalism with society. Methodologically, the project aims to establish praxeological communication research in German communication science by combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Used are (semi-)automated network and content analyses as well as interviews and ethnography. The project is funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) for three years and includes a cooperation with Axel Bruns (Queensland University Brisbane, Australia). It is led by Margreth Lünenborg (Freie Universität Berlin), in collaboration with Christoph Raetzsch (Aarhus University, Denmark).
