Our project investigates the usage and mobilisation of human rights by LGBTIQ* movements since the 1970s. One of our main research interests concerns the ways in which these mobilisations enabled certain kinds of agency and impeded others. We also ask which effects these mobilisations had on the LGBTIQ* movements themselves. Of particular interest to us are transnational LGBTIQ* networks and education politics as well as policy. The period of investigation extends from the (re-) emergence of LGBTIQ* movements in the 1970s, over the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s, debates about same sex marriage in the 1990s and 2000s, to the increasing institutionalisation of LGBTIQ* causes – and countermobilizations against them – in the states of the Global North in the 2010s. The project is part of the German Research Foundation (“Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft”, DFG) research unit 2265 “Law – Gender – Collectivity. Processes of standardization, categorization and solidarization” which investigates law and gender as dimensions influencing the development of different collectives. Certain exchange processes, interdependencies, contradictions, and ambiguities develop at the intersection of everyday, institutional, and judicial practices. Focussing on these developments is central to the work within the research unit. Subject of the second funding phase, beginning in 2021, are collectives as important drivers of changes in society’s understandings of community, common good, and solidarity. The unit’s main research focus will be on struggles about what defines “the general”, attempts of its reconfiguration as well as the conceptualization of a new common. The research unit consists of scholars from the Humboldt University Berlin (HU), the Free University Berlin (FU), the Technical University Berlin (TU), the University of Potsdam (UP) and the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (EUV).
