Mechanisms for sex-specific differences in migration patterns of human endothelial cells

Significant sex differences exist in the incidence, pathogenesis, pharmacology, and outcome of cardiovascular diseases. The underlying causes are only partially understood. Little is known regarding sex disparities in the vasculature. In a joint cooperation with the group of Prof. Petra Knaus (FU Berlin) strong differences in migration patterns between male and female human endothelial cells were observed. Female human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) exhibited significantly increased VEGF-dependent migration compared to male HUVEC. This could suggest differences in vascular repair properties between genders. The aim of our project is therefore to analyze molecular mechanisms for the observed sex differences in migratory properties of male and female HUVEC. In particular, we will focus on sex-specific differences in VEGF- induced signaling pathways of the cells. The results of the project could contribute to our understanding of physiological differences and help to disclose mechanisms responsible for gender differences in the vascular system.
