- Das Forschungsprojekt untersucht das Entstehen von Zugehörigkeitsräumen im Kontext von Migration und Amateurfußball. Dies wird ethnographisch am Beispiel von Amateurfußballteams von peruanischen und bolivianischen Migrant/innen in den brasilianischen Metropolen Rio de Janeiro und São Paulo untersucht. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf den geschlechtsspezifischen Unterschieden zwischen weiblichen und männlichen Amateurfußballteams. Dabei soll die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung von Fußball als alltägliche transkulturelle Praktik analysiert werden: sowohl als Mittel zur Integration von Migrant/innen in die Ankunftsgesellschaft als auch zur Aufrechterhaltung bzw. Neugestaltung kultureller Zugehörigkeit von Migrant/innen. Der Prozess, durch den Zugehörigkeit hergestellt wird, wird als die Aneignung von Raum durch alltägliche Aktivitäten - in diesem Fall Amateurfußball - verstanden. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass innerhalb dieser Zugehörigkeitsräume transkulturelle und geschlechtsspezifische Aneignungsprozesse eine wichtige Rolle spielen, da die kulturellen Konstruktionen von Geschlechterordnungen durch Macht und Herrschaftsverhältnisse in transkulturellen Räumen auf besondere Art sichtbar werden. Es wird gefragt, welche transkulturellen und geschlechtsspezifischen Aneignungsstrategien migrantische Amateurfußballspieler-/innen zur Ausgestaltung von Zugehörigkeitsräumen bilden. Die Gründung von migrantischen Amateurfußballteams ist ein weit verbreitetes Phänomen in vielen Metropolen weltweit: nicht nur in Brasilien gründen lateinamerikanische Migrant/innen Fußballclubs, sondern auch in europäischen Großstädten wie zum Beispiel Madrid, Berlin und Paris. Der Fußballsport ist für Migrant/innen ein wichtiger Raum für kulturelles und gemeinschaftliches Zusammenkommen, über das die Zugehörigkeit zur selben Herkunfts-Nation, -Region oder sogar -Lokalität ausgedrückt wird. Gleichzeitig ist die Aneignung von Raum für den Fußballsport jedoch auch als transkulturelle Strategie bedeutend: Die Migrant/innen integrieren sich damit in die brasilianische Alltagskultur und drücken ihre Zugehörigkeit zum Ankunftsland aus, da der Amateurfußball eine weitverbreitete und beliebte Sportart in Brasilien ist. Das Projekt leistet einen Beitrag zu Forschungsarbeiten, die Fußball als bedeutenden gesell-schaftlichen Interaktionsraum begreifen, in dem soziale, kulturelle und geschlechtsspezifische Differenzen ausgehandelt werden. Dabei wird insbesondere die transkulturelle Bedeutung von Fußball als Raum zur Herstellung von Zugehörigkeit im alltäglichen Leben von Migrant/innen herausgestellt; ein Thema, das in der kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung bisher wenig Beachtung gefunden hat. Zugleich trägt das Projekt zur Forschung über neue Süd-Süd-Migrationsbewegungen in Lateinamerika bei; speziell von bolivianischen und peruanischen Migrant/innen nach Brasilien, was ebenfalls ein noch wenig beachtetes Forschungsfeld ist.

- It is important to ensure that women and men, including members from sexual and gender minority groups (SGMs), are equally represented in Europe’s workforce. The EU-funded G-VERSITY project is a European Training Network that will provide interdisciplinary and intersectoral training to early-stage researchers with the aim of determining the effects of significant background factors on the educational and professional trajectories of women and men, including SGMs. The project will generate scientifically based interventions to be used in workplaces and design an innovative and practical toolbox to be used by the public sector as well as commercial and non-profit companies. G-VERSITY will bring together nine leading European research groups from various sectors and seven non-academic partners, offering training that centers on the collaborative supervision of 15 individual research projects.

- On the banks of the legendary Indus, set against the Kirthar mountains lies the dusty town of Sehwan - home to the most important Sufi of the region, Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. Hindus, Muslims and Christians continue to revere the saint, who some believe was Shiva incarnate, for others, an antinomian ascetic who rose to the skies in the form of a falcon. Legend has it that Shivasthan as it was once known, was the centre of Shiva pilgrimage much before the Sufis arrived in the region. Today, each year, in the eighth month of the Muslim lunar calendar, an estimated million pilgrims from all across the region gather to celebrate the annual festival in the southern province of Sindh in Pakistan. Here at the dargāh (shrine) of the ‘red Sufi’, one comes across individuals who refer to themselves as fakirs of the saint. These are no ordinary visitors in that they do not come to make everyday vows or seek ordinary favours: sons, jobs or remedies to domestic problems and illnesses. Instead, they claim to have intercessory powers. Men, women and hermaphrodites speak of dreams and visions not only as means of initiation but of establishing, maintaining and improving their communication with the saint. Such fakirs and pīrs do not derive their positions from notions of descent or routinised charisma, as does the sayyid elite of Sehwan. Instead, they become fakirs through a rigorous process of bodily and spiritual discipline and in so doing reveal a parallel system of spiritual exchange. Often imagined as diametrically opposite to the man-in-the-world, the lives of fakirs, male, female and hermaphrodite at the dargāh of Sehwan sharīf suggest at best an inadequacy of categories. Characterised by a certain tension between their household responsibilities and an individual calling – a dilemma most distinct in their personal narratives – these fakirs inhabit a trans- space of familial and fakīrī worlds, one, which they frequently traverse but do not seek to stabilise. Short of renunciation, it may be argued, these fakirs produce a ‘borderland’ of difference. Preliminary data suggests that the honing of inward and outward dispositions puts within reach a distinct gender and bodily imaginary. The fakir body is in this sense, an outcome of fakīrī, and its doing, a re-orientation of the subject: a deviation off course, beyond the prescribed, exceeding the ordinary – and marked out through the embodied practices of its actors: male, female and hermaphrodite. Relying on self-representations in biographical narratives, and participant observation of everyday practices, both within and beyond the shrine, this study aims to explore the ways in which fakirs of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sewhan sharīf, through a re-orientation of gender and bodily practices, come to articulate their subjectivities. In other words, the study documents how men, women and hermaphrodites relate to notions of body and gender in their articulation of fakīrī as a category of self.

- How do woman intellectuals cope with political transitions and continue their intellectual careers? To answer this question, this research study will examine the experiences of Ottoman/Turkish woman intellectuals in the Republican Era (1923-1945) and analyze gender politics of the founding ideology of Kemalism and its role in shaping woman intellectuals’ identities and careers. Using archival and biographical material, the political discourse of the republican era regarding the position of intellectual women and the boundaries of their mobility will be analyzed. Drawing on this background, women’s strategies and struggles against the nationalist project of the official ideology of Kemalism will be examined. Paying attention to the continuity from the Unionist period, this study will include women called “the daughters of the Republic” and Ottoman-Turkish intellectuals who began their careers in the Ottoman Empire. Then it will try to account for the divergence in their careers. Going beyond individual life histories of woman intellectuals, this study will bring multiple woman intellectuals in the republican period together and provide a comparative perspective in a politically turbulent time. It aims to shed light on how patriarchal practices became hegemonic in the nation building process among secular and modernizing discourses.

- Gender policies have played a prominent role in Tunisian politics since its independence in 1956. The first president Bourguiba enhanced women’s societal status as part of his modernizing project and to win women’s loyalty. His successor Ben Ali used the protection of women’s rights as an argument to legitimize the persecution of Islamists. Women’s emancipation was thus promoted in a paternalistic logic as a personal project of the presidents. Yet in opposition to this ‘state-feminism’, an autonomous feminist organisation developed in the 1980s. To improve women’s status and avoid repression, these activists constantly had to walk the line between critique of the regime and cooperation with state institutions. Given the association of women’s rights with the old regime, many observers as well as Tunisian feminists feared a backlash after Ben Ali’s departure in January 2011. Nevertheless, both women’s rights and the autonomous feminist actors seem to have maintained an important position in politics. Therefore my PhD project analyses the development of the feminist movement and the conflict on women’s rights during the political transition.

- Zentrales Ziel des GenderOpen-Projekts ist die Einrichtung einer elektronischen Plattform, auf der Publikationen und andere Wissensbestände der Geschlechterforschung dauerhaft frei zugänglich gemacht und nachhaltig gesichert werden. So soll es Forschenden und Interessierten zukünftig leichter möglich sein, Veröffentlichungen im Feld der Geschlechterforschung aufzufinden, mithilfe weniger Klicks einzusehen und mit ihnen zu arbeiten. Autor_innen wird gleichzeitig die Möglichkeit geboten, ihre Forschungsergebnisse aus dem Bereich der Geschlechterforschung öffentlich zugänglich zu machen und damit schneller und zielgerichteter in den Fokus der wissenschaftlichen Aufmerksamkeit zu rücken. Die Freischaltung des GenderOpen-Repositoriums ist für Herbst 2017 geplant.
