Kurzbeschreibung

The 25th of January revolution has been claimed by many historians, scholars and thinkers as one of the most important events in Egypt’s modern history. It has been coined as a politically and socially transformative experience by most partakers. One problematic that has intrigued tremendous academic interest has been the gender dynamics on the square and its significances both for the revolutionary moment and the aftermath. Starting from this point at issue, I aim to examine in this research how gender order has been negotiated on the streets of Cairo during the 18 days and how this challenged the gender regime in Egypt in general. I will engage with literature on gender in Egypt while exploring the relation that gender has with affect theory and emotions research through examining such notions as ‘affective solidarity’ and ‘affective bonds’ and how it influences gender relations through fostering a sense of collective unity as well as explore gendered emotion work and its relation to mobilization. Furthermore, I will address the contentious issue of gender dynamics beyond the square as I explore whether those affective momAffect, emotions, feminism, gender, Egyptian revolution, local politics.ents resonated and developed into transformative experiences producing new gendered political subjectivities.
